use # length operator instead of string.len (canonicalize)

Used this perl command:

$ # perl -pi -e 's/string\.len\((.*?)\)/#\1/g' *.lua

Also fixed one instance where the above command didn't correctly
translate the intended code (string.len(a .. b .. c)).
